In India, implementing robust Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks is crucial for organizations aiming to enhance transparency, accountability, and sustainability practices. Among the most widely accepted frameworks are the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR), and the AccountAbility 1000 (AA1000) Standards.

GRI

GRI, a framework with global recognition, encompasses over 11,000 organizations and hosts more than 40,000 reports in its extensive database. Offering flexible, sector-neutral guidelines with well-defined criteria, GRI was established in 1997 through collaboration between U.S. non-profits CERES and Tellus Institute, supported by UNEP.

BRSR

SEBI's objective is to enhance ESG disclosures by mandating BRSR for the top 1,000 listed entities starting from FY2022–23, following a period of voluntary reporting in FY2021–22. BRSR ensures thorough disclosure of non-financial performance and upholds rigorous standards for compliance and communication.

AA1000

The AA1000 Assurance Standard (AA1000AS v3) evaluates the assurance of sustainability information based on the AA1000 AccountAbility Principles (AA1000AP, 2018). It ensures organizations are accountable for managing, performing, and reporting sustainability initiatives in accordance with the AA1000AP (2018) principles of inclusivity, materiality, responsiveness, and impact. The standard underscores rigorous assurance processes that extend beyond mere data verification.
